Preschool - 30206001

Preschool education plays an essential role in early childhood development. It prepares your child socially, emotionally and academically for the classroom environment of kindergarten. Long-term benefits include improved confidence, self-esteem, communication, and group interactions. It also introduces a classroom schedule and format and strengthens their ability to follow instructions. Preschool kick starts their education and is a great foundation for a life of learning.

According to the National Institute for Early Education Research, the types of teaching activities and classroom emphases that contribute to a high-quality early education for children include the following:

• opportunities to learn persistence when working at tasks, direction following, and good listening skills
• focus on language and literacy skills, as well as interactive book reading
• emphasis on teaching children problem-solving skills
• helping children expand their knowledge and increase their vocabulary
• opportunities to learn beginning skills involving the alphabet, numbers, and spatial awareness
• focus on scientific thinking skills as well as information about the everyday environment, the world, and how things work
• emphasis on teaching early literacy and mathematics through a variety of activities and projects
• opportunity for preschoolers to engage in music, art, and dramatic play
• Educational program in which parents are involved and have opportunities to watch and take part in classroom activities

As kindergarten becomes more academic, many parents look to preschool to launch their child on the path to success in school. At the same time, parents may worry that the current trend to focus on pre-math and pre-literacy skills in preschool cuts into important play time and pushes a child to grow up too fast. It’s a confusing issue, especially with friends and family offering different opinions and advice.
Fortunately, in selecting a preschool, our parents aren’t forced to choose between protecting a child’s play time and making sure she’s ready for kindergarten. Our high-quality early childhood education program will offer children both.

We understand the particular ways that young children develop and learn. Our teachers organize space, time and activities to be in sync with children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities.
Both Sprouts and Tiny Tots are state-licensed preschool programs that utilize developmentally-appropriate activities and materials that are centered around a purposeful-play atmosphere.
Preschool sessions last three hours, and are offered two, three or five days a week. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Proof of age, shot records and physical are required. Participant information packets and the preschool policies and procedures manual are located at www.northglenn.org/youthprograms. Please fill them out completely (*the state requires that every line asking for addresses and phone numbers be filled out) and return prior to your child's first day. Online registration is available for sessions paid in full. Payment plan options are available if you register for the complete semester, please call (303) 450-8800 or stop by the recreation center for more information.
Sprouts Preschool - Ages 3-4
Your child will make new friends and have fun in this introduction to preschool. They'll practice fine motor skills, following directions and social skill building. Teachers will introduce them to concepts like letters, numbers and colors through song, music, movement, and arts and crafts.
Young children learn social skills and emotional self-control in “real time.” Three- and 4-year-olds learn through their experiences and good teachers make time for those “teachable moments” when they can help children learn to manage frustrations or anger. They don’t automatically step in to resolve children’s conflicts for them; they have a well-honed sense of when to let children work out their own problems and when to intervene.

Preschool - 30206002

Ages 4-5
Our classes are designed to encourage participation through a mix of teacher-led instruction and discovery learning. The curriculum includes math, music, arts, crafts, literacy, science exploration, plus so much more! Your child will grow socially as well academically. Come join us and get your kiddo ready for kindergarten.

Children’s sense of competence and self-worth grow as they learn to take care of themselves and help others. Teachers appeal to a young child’s desire to engage in “real work” by offering him chances to help out in the classroom, for example, by setting the table at snack time or feeding the classroom hamster. Children are expected to wash their hands before snack time, keep personal belongings in their “cubby,” and put away toys before moving to a new activity.

Teachers also encourage a child to view herself as a resource for other children. For example, a teacher might ask a child who’s more competent at pouring water to help a child who is learning. Or she might ask a “veteran” preschooler to show a newcomer where the sand toys are kept.

Throughout their school years, much of children’s learning will take place in the company of their peers. In our high-quality preschool program, children are introduced to the behaviors required to function successfully in a kindergarten classroom. For example, during group activities such as “circle time,” children learn to focus attention on the teacher, listen while others are speaking, and wait their turn to talk.
